SEWING BASICS - BUYING FABRIC & NOTIONS

Buying fabric and notions can be a daunting task if you've never done it before. So to try and make it simpler for you, I've outlined some tips to help you get started.

First of all, certain fabrics are much more difficult to sew with than others. Anything that is stretchy (jersey, spandex, lycra, etc.), or leather / fake leather will be more challenging to sew with (and will need a special needle), so as a beginner you should avoid these. As well, their are fabrics that are 'directional', which means that they have a certain direction that is the top versus the bottom of the design, and therefore could be 'upside down' (example left). Anything directional, or that has stripes, plaid or generally a design that needs to be 'lined up' correctly in order to look good should be avoided for your first project.
When using a pattern, the pattern will recommend certain types of fabric to use for that project. When at Fabricland, the fabric will be sorted on tables by type of fabric. When you find a fabric you like, you take the entire spool of fabric up to the cutting table and they will cut the desired length for you. How much fabric you will need is dependent on the size guide (reference Sewing Basics - Measuring yourself).
Different fabrics are different widths; they will either be 115cm or 150cm wide (as a standard), your pattern will tell you depending on width how many metres you will need. Fabric will always come folded in half length wise (so if you're not using a pattern keep that in mind). **you will likely want to keep your fabric folded in half because many pattern pieces will need to be 'cut on the fold' (reference Sewing Basics - How to read and follow a pattern part 2 - Markings & Symbols)**
When buying notions, follow the pattern specifications. Fabricland will have a notions section with zippers, threads, buttons, elastic, and many many many other possible notions you could need for sewing. My only recommendation when it comes to buying notions is to buy Gutermann thread - in my experience it is the best brand of thread and using a high quality thread makes SUCH A DIFFERENCE in not only the quality of the final product, but also the ease of threading a machine, and the general sewing process.
The Fabricland employees will be knowledgeable and able to assist should you have any issues. Selecting your fabric can be one of the most overwhelming parts to the sewing process, but also one of the most exciting! (Also it is 100% worth it to get a Fabricland membership card for the discounts and promotions - even if you're not planning on sewing very often). Let me know how your adventures at Fabricland go, and remember to check Sip & Sew for new posts!!
